Walking through the bustling streets of Hanoi, it’s not uncommon to hear the familiar melodies of popular Chinese dramas drifting from cafes and homes alike. For over three decades, Chinese television shows and films have found a devoted audience in Vietnam, bridging cultures and sparking a fascination among the youth.
“Chinese dramas are actually very popular in Vietnam. They air during prime time. They were even more frequent before,” said Nguyen Kim Ngoc, a local employee. The allure of these shows lies not just in their storytelling but also in the rich tapestry of Chinese culture they portray.
University student Nguyen Hoang Trung shared, “Watching Chinese dramas helps us better understand Chinese culture, history, lifestyle, people, and cuisine.” For many young Vietnamese, these dramas are a window into a neighboring culture that shares deep historical ties with their own.
The strong connection between China and Vietnam, linked by mountains and rivers, has fostered a profound friendship. As the Belt and Road Initiative aligns with Vietnam’s development strategies, cooperation between the two nations has expanded in areas like cultural exchanges, infrastructure development, and technological innovation.
China’s efforts to promote its traditional culture globally have been advancing through continuous opening up. The popularity of Chinese dramas in Vietnam is a testament to this cultural outreach, resonating with audiences and contributing to mutual understanding between the two countries.
