BEIJING—As the 15th Beijing International Film Festival unfolds from April 18-26, the allure of Chinese cinema continues to captivate audiences worldwide. For Adel, a Kyrgyz student at Tsinghua University, Chinese films have opened a new window into storytelling and culture.

“‘Better Days’ was the first Chinese film I watched, and it left a profound impact on me,” Adel shared enthusiastically. “It tackled real issues that resonated deeply.”

Adel’s appreciation doesn’t stop there. She is particularly fond of “Ne Zha,” describing it as “visually stunning and emotionally rich.” The animated film offers a fresh take on a classic myth, blending spectacular animation with heartfelt themes.

Another favorite is “Big World,” which Adel praises for its “gentle yet powerful storytelling.” The film’s nuanced exploration of human emotions has left a lasting impression on her.

Adel expresses admiration for young Chinese actors and directors who bring these stories to life. “Their talent and creativity are inspiring,” she said. “I hope to see more films exploring themes of family, identity, and personal growth.”

She believes that true stories reflecting the diverse lives of young people across China can foster deeper understanding and connection. “Cinema has the power to bridge cultures,” Adel noted. “I look forward to more narratives that showcase the richness of Chinese society.”

As the festival celebrates the 130th anniversary of world cinema and the 120th anniversary of Chinese cinema in 2025, voices like Adel’s highlight the growing global appreciation for Chinese storytelling through film.
