As leaders from across the Pacific prepare to gather for the Third China-Pacific Island Countries Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Xiamen, Fujian Province, Fijian youth Matthew is sharing his hopes for a brighter future built on deeper cooperation between China, Fiji, and the wider Pacific region.

Matthew, who is passionate about his country’s rich customs and culture, highlights the importance of singing, dancing, and the traditional drink kava in Fijian ceremonies. “Singing and dancing are important components of our culture, as well as the drink kava, which will be enjoyed in the ceremonies,” he says.

An admirer of Chinese culture, Matthew is particularly impressed by traditional Chinese costumes and the animated film Ne Zha 2. His appreciation underscores the potential for cultural exchange between the two nations. “I am a big fan of Chinese culture and traditional costumes,” Matthew shares. “The movie Ne Zha 2 really captivated me.”

With China’s Foreign Minister and Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee Wang Yi set to chair the upcoming meeting on May 28 and 29, representatives from 11 island countries with diplomatic relations with China will be in attendance. Matthew hopes that the summit will foster stronger relationships and collaborative opportunities. “I wish for deeper cooperation and a better future for China, Fiji, and the Pacific,” he expresses.

The voices of young people like Matthew highlight the aspiration for unity and mutual growth in the region, as nations come together to address shared challenges and opportunities.
