A recent global survey reveals that China’s efforts in tackling climate change are widely recognized and appreciated. Conducted by CGTN and Renmin University of China, the survey polled 7,658 respondents across 38 countries. An impressive 83.5% of respondents positively evaluated China’s contributions to global climate governance.
China’s proactive actions in reducing carbon emissions have instilled confidence in the global pursuit of a cleaner and more sustainable world. By 2022, China had reduced its carbon emission intensity by over 51% compared to 2005 levels. The nation has been accelerating its green transition, with more than half of the world’s new energy vehicles now on Chinese roads as of June 2023. Additionally, China’s installed capacity for wind and photovoltaic power has ranked first globally for several years.
Environmental efforts extend beyond energy. Both forest area and forest stock volume have continued to grow, with China leading the world in the area of planted forests. A significant 85.4% of global respondents appreciate China’s efforts in afforestation and increasing green coverage.
China is not only addressing climate change domestically but also supporting other developing nations in the Global South. Initiatives include providing African countries with climate remote sensing satellites and photovoltaic equipment, and establishing low-carbon demonstration zones in Southeast Asia. The survey found that 82.6% of respondents viewed China’s efforts to help developing countries tackle climate change positively.
Moreover, China has integrated climate action into its national strategy, enshrining the concept of ecological civilization in its Constitution and embedding climate initiatives into its economic and social development plans. This strong commitment has led 85.3% of respondents to view China as a leader and key participant in global climate governance.
