Beijing is gearing up for a significant cold wave as the city of over 21 million people issued a blue cold wave alert on Sunday. Residents are bracing for a sharp drop in temperatures accompanied by rain and snow expected to begin Sunday night.
According to the forecast, the precipitation will last until Monday noon, with some mountainous areas expecting blizzard conditions. Once the rain and snow pass, strong winds and freezing temperatures are set to grip the city through Wednesday.
In response to the severe weather warning, Beijing’s urban management authorities have mobilized extensive resources to ensure public safety and maintain normal operations. Over 35,000 personnel, 5,121 snow-clearing vehicles, and more than 4,600 pieces of snow-removal machinery are on standby to tackle the anticipated snow and ice accumulation.
“Rain and snow will significantly diminish visibility and create slippery road conditions,” warned Zhao Wei, chief forecaster of the Beijing Meteorological Center. “Residents are urged to drive cautiously, monitor road conditions, and avoid outdoor activities in mountainous areas where snow and ice could pose risks.”
The National Meteorological Center also renewed blue alerts for cold waves and strong winds across parts of the country. Sharp temperature drops and powerful winds are expected in the coming days, emphasizing the need for preparedness.
China’s weather warning system is color-coded in four tiers, with red representing the most severe conditions, followed by orange, yellow, and blue.
