Storm Bert Brings Widespread Flooding in Britain

Storm Bert Unleashes Devastating Floods Across Britain

Storm Bert unleashed havoc across Britain this weekend, bringing strong winds and heavy rain that led to widespread flooding, especially in Wales. Authorities issued around 100 flood alerts nationwide as communities grappled with the storm’s severe impact.

In Rhondda Cynon Taf county in South Wales, officials declared a “major incident” after 200 to 300 homes and buildings were flooded. Wales’ First Minister, Eluned Morgan, described the flooding as “absolutely devastating,” noting that 80% of November’s average rainfall fell in just 48 hours.

Tragically, a body was found near the River Conwy during search efforts for a 75-year-old man who went missing on Saturday while walking his dog. While the victim has yet to be officially identified, the incident underscores the storm’s dangerous conditions.

At least three deaths were reported on British roads on Saturday. Among them was a man in his 60s from Hampshire, who was killed when a tree branch fell on his car. Authorities are investigating whether these fatalities are linked to the extreme weather.

Storm Bert began its assault overnight from Saturday to Sunday, battering Britain and Ireland with wind gusts up to 110 kilometers per hour, heavy rain, and even snow in some areas. The severe weather disrupted transport links, led to road closures, train cancellations, and left thousands without power.

Approximately 80 properties in England have been flooded, according to the Environment Agency. High-alert areas include the South West, the West Midlands, and the Calder Valley in the North of England due to heavy rain and recent snowmelt. While the risk of flooding is expected to decrease, some regions may remain affected until Tuesday.

In London, several parks and tourist attractions were closed as a precaution on Sunday. As affected communities begin recovery efforts, authorities urge residents to stay vigilant and follow safety advisories.
