Over 60,000 people have been displaced by severe flooding in Malaysia’s northern and eastern regions as of 8 p.m. local time on Thursday. The country’s social welfare department reported that Kelantan state is the worst affected, with 49,048 residents taking shelter in 207 flood relief centers.
Other affected states include Terengganu, Kedah, Perlis, and Perak, where thousands more have been evacuated due to rising waters. Heavy rains have caused rivers to overflow, cutting off roads and isolating communities.
Malaysia’s meteorological department had previously warned of heavy rains continuing until the end of November. The relentless downpour has led to significant disruptions, with schools closed and transportation services halted in some areas.
Authorities are working tirelessly to provide aid and support to those affected. Emergency services are on high alert, and volunteers are assisting in relief efforts.
As the nation braces for more rain, residents are urged to stay informed and follow safety instructions from local officials.
