Nestled between majestic mountains and the vast expanse of the sea in east China’s Shandong Province lies Yandunjiao Village, a hidden coastal paradise waiting to be explored.
A Recognized Gem
Recently honored as one of the United Nations’ “2024 Best Tourism Villages,” Yandunjiao is the first village in Shandong to receive this global recognition. Its 7,000-meter-long coastline offers breathtaking views and a prime location facing the Yellow Sea.
Rich History and Unique Architecture
Founded during the Chongzhen era of the Ming Dynasty (1627-1644), Yandunjiao carries tales as old as time. The village was named after a beacon tower built atop Gushan Mountain to fend off pirates during the early Ming Dynasty.
One of the village’s most captivating features is its traditional seagrass houses. Constructed with sturdy stone walls and roofs thatched with seagrass, these homes are naturally insulated, keeping inhabitants warm in winter and cool in summer. Remarkably resistant to fire, they stand as “living specimens of Chinese ecological architecture.” With over 246 seagrass houses comprising more than 1,300 rooms, some of these structures have stood strong for over 300 years.
A Sanctuary for Swans
Yandunjiao isn’t just about history—it’s also a sanctuary for nature. Every winter, thousands of whooper swans migrate to its shores, transforming the village into Asia’s largest winter habitat for these majestic birds. From November to April, the coastline comes alive with the graceful presence of swans, earning Yandunjiao the affectionate nickname “Swan Village.”
Abundant Marine Life
The village’s coastline offers abundant marine resources. With a thriving marine aquaculture industry, Yandunjiao produces up to 15,000 tonnes of kelp, oysters, scallops, and more annually. The harmonious blend of mountains, sea, reefs, and beaches makes it a haven for both locals and visitors.
A Destination Worth Exploring
In recent years, Yandunjiao has leveraged its natural and cultural riches to develop sustainable tourism. The unique blend of picturesque landscapes, traditional architecture, and vibrant marine life attracts countless visitors seeking relaxation, inspiration, and adventure. Whether it’s sightseeing, photography, or simply soaking in the serene atmosphere, Yandunjiao offers an unforgettable experience.
