As the world celebrates World Soil Day on December 5, China has achieved a significant milestone by completing the sampling phase of its third national soil survey. Launched in 2022, the survey has gathered a staggering 3.11 million soil samples from across the country.
Covering approximately 11 billion mu (over 733 million hectares), the survey spans various land types including cropland, forest land, grassland, and unused land. This monumental effort aims to thoroughly examine soil properties, varieties, and utilization to ensure better protection and sustainable use of land resources in the future.
In addition to the survey, China unveiled an action plan in November to enhance the prevention and control of soil pollution sources until 2027. Issued by the Ministry of Ecology and Environment and the National Development and Reform Commission, the plan emphasizes improving soil ecological quality and promoting high-quality economic development.
This year’s World Soil Day theme, “Caring for Soils: Measure, Monitor, Manage,” highlights the critical role of accurate soil data in understanding soil characteristics and making informed decisions for sustainable soil management. China’s recent initiatives align with this global focus, demonstrating a commitment to preserving soil health for future generations.
