Chinese scientists have decoded the DNA secrets of the rare Tibetan antelope, unlocking how this majestic creature survives in the extreme high-altitude environments of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau.
A team from the Northwest Institute of Plateau Biology and Qinghai University has successfully assembled the most accurate and complete chromosome-level genome of the Tibetan antelope to date. This breakthrough not only marks a significant advancement in genetic research but also opens new doors for biodiversity conservation efforts.
“This achievement provides an essential genetic foundation for conserving plateau biodiversity,” said Zhang Tongzuo, a researcher involved in the study. “Understanding the genome helps us predict how the Tibetan antelope might adapt to future climate changes, allowing us to implement more effective conservation measures.”
The Tibetan antelope, known for its light tan fur and grayish-white face, inhabits high-altitude regions ranging from 3,700 to 5,500 meters above sea level. Once hunted to the brink of extinction, with populations dwindling to around 50,000 in the 1990s due to poaching, their numbers have now rebounded to over 300,000 thanks to dedicated conservation efforts.
By analyzing the genome, scientists can identify antelope populations that require special protection to maintain genetic diversity. This is crucial for preventing diseases and ensuring the species’ long-term survival. Additionally, studying the genetic relationships between different populations aids in designing protected areas and planning cross-regional conservation initiatives.
“Our findings not only deepen our understanding of how the Tibetan antelope has co-evolved with its harsh environment over millions of years but also provide insights into the adaptability of other highland species,” Zhang explained. “This genetic data fills a critical gap and offers valuable resources for future research.”
The research team began their extensive field surveys and genome sequencing efforts in 2022, utilizing cutting-edge third-generation sequencing technology.
