High atop the Qinghai-Xizang Plateau in northwest China lies Hoh Xil, an expansive and remote sanctuary for some of the world’s most endangered species, including the majestic Tibetan antelope. Here, a dedicated group of rangers tirelessly works to protect these creatures, standing as guardians of one of Earth’s last great wildernesses.
Each May, the silence of Hoh Xil’s vast grasslands is broken by the echoing footsteps of thousands of Tibetan antelopes embarking on their annual migration. Their journey is fraught with peril as they navigate treacherous terrains and cross busy highways. For over a decade, ranger De Ga of the Wudaoliang Protection Station has patrolled these rugged lands, ensuring the animals’ safe passage.
“At 4,800 meters above sea level, every step feels like you’re carrying an extra 60 kilograms,” says De Ga. The rangers face not only high-altitude fatigue but also severe weather and isolation. Heavy rains swell rivers, turning crossings into life-or-death trials for newborn calves. Rangers wade through icy, chest-deep waters, ever ready to lend a hand—or a lifeline.
Nearby, the Sonam Dargye Protection Station serves as a haven for orphaned and injured antelope calves. Rangers like Jiangwenduojie provide round-the-clock care, nurturing the young until they’re strong enough to return to the wild. This “kindergarten” is a testament to the commitment these guardians have to each individual life.
The Tibetan antelope was once on the brink of extinction, driven by relentless poaching for its coveted underfur. Thanks to concerted conservation efforts, their numbers in Hoh Xil have rebounded to over 70,000. The rangers’ relentless dedication has been pivotal in this success, symbolizing hope for endangered species worldwide.
