China’s Ministry of Ecology and Environment has unveiled 38 outstanding cases under the Beautiful Rivers and Lakes project, highlighting the nation’s ongoing efforts to protect and rejuvenate its water bodies.
The initiative showcases how local authorities are balancing environmental protection with economic development, ensuring a harmonious relationship between people and nature.
Model Rivers Lead the Way
The Qinghe River in Beijing and the Mangdao River in Yangzhou City, Jiangsu Province, have been recognized for their coordinated approaches to water resource management. These projects aim to set new standards for preserving aquatic environments across the country.
Turning Ecology into Economy
In Xuancheng City, Anhui Province, and Foshan City, Guangdong Province, local governments have successfully transformed ecological advantages into economic benefits. By exploring the potential of ecological products, they’ve promoted high-quality development along the Qingyi River and the Gaoming River.
Joint Governance for a Shared Future
The Tongbo River, which flows through Chongqing Municipality and Sichuan Province, serves as a model for integrated governance. Collaborative efforts have connected the upstream and downstream sections, enhancing the river’s health and sustainability.
A Nationwide Commitment
This year, the Ministry announced that 2,573 water bodies under national monitoring are now part of the Beautiful Rivers and Lakes project. It’s estimated that by 2027, 40 percent of these waters will meet the program’s stringent requirements, showcasing clear waters, green banks, and thriving aquatic life.
Since its launch in 2021, the project has highlighted 94 exemplary cases, underscoring China’s commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainable development.
