China has announced that the period from 2015 to 2023 represents the warmest nine years in its recorded meteorological history. Released on Friday in Beijing, the 16th annual Report on Actions to Address Climate Change highlights the escalating challenges posed by global warming.
According to the report, not only have temperatures risen, but the frequency of natural disasters has also increased annually since 1980. In the first 11 months of 2023, China experienced its third-highest precipitation levels ever, with heavy rainfall impacting both northern and southern regions. The country also faced widespread extreme temperatures and frequent typhoons, particularly during the autumn season.
The report urges nations worldwide to strengthen cooperation as climate change impacts become more severe. It emphasizes the importance of joint efforts to mitigate the effects of global warming and adapt to new environmental realities.
On a positive note, significant progress has been made in China in sectors such as renewable energy, electric vehicles, and green buildings. Mechanisms like carbon emissions trading markets have proven effective in promoting carbon reduction. Additionally, artificial intelligence has been applied to climate-related fields with promising results, and it is anticipated to play a crucial role in future climate change mitigation strategies.
The report was jointly compiled by experts from the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS), the China Meteorological Administration (CMA), and frontline scholars specializing in climate change. It underscores China’s commitment to addressing environmental challenges and contributing to global sustainability efforts.
