Beijing has achieved a remarkable environmental milestone, recording 290 days of good air quality in 2024—the highest since monitoring began.
The municipal ecology and environment bureau announced on Thursday that these 290 days accounted for 79.2% of the year, marking an increase of 19 days compared to the previous year and a significant rise of 114 days since 2013.
The number of days with heavy air pollution plummeted from 58 in 2013 to just two in 2024, a dramatic decrease of 96.6%.
Beijing’s average concentration of PM2.5—tiny particles that pose serious health risks—dropped to 30.5 micrograms per cubic meter in 2024. This level meets China’s national standards for the fourth consecutive year.
Since 2013, the capital has seen substantial reductions in key pollutants: PM2.5 decreased by 65.9%, PM10 by 50%, nitrogen dioxide by 57.1%, and sulfur dioxide by an impressive 88.7%.
These improvements reflect Beijing’s ongoing efforts to combat air pollution and promote environmental sustainability.
