Zogye Wetland: A Historical Refuge and Ecological Treasure
Hidden in the high-altitude expanses of Sichuan Province in southwest China lies the Zogye Wetland—a place where history and nature intertwine. This vast wetland witnessed some of the toughest days of the Red Army during the arduous Long March, serving as both a challenge and a refuge in their journey.
With its low oxygen levels and sprawling swamps, the Zogye Wetland is a formidable landscape for humans. Yet, it’s a haven for wildlife. Black-necked cranes, wolves, and numerous other species call this wetland home, thriving in its unique ecosystem.
World Wetlands Day 2025: Protecting Our Future
As we approach February 2, 2025, we celebrate the 29th World Wetlands Day with the theme “Protecting Wetlands for Our Common Future.” Wetlands like Zogye are among Earth’s most valuable ecosystems, supporting 40 percent of all known species and playing a crucial role in climate resilience and disaster protection.
Wetlands store carbon, help buffer against floods and droughts, and sustain millions of livelihoods around the world. However, they face significant threats from pollution, invasive species, and degradation. Protecting and restoring these vital ecosystems is essential for biodiversity, sustainable development, and achieving global climate goals.
By integrating wetlands into urban planning, climate policies, and disaster risk strategies, we can work towards a more resilient and sustainable future—for both people and nature.
Our Role in Conservation
As the stewards of our planet, it’s up to us to ensure that natural treasures like the Zogye Wetland are preserved for generations to come. Whether through raising awareness, supporting conservation efforts, or making sustainable choices, every action counts.
Let’s take inspiration from the enduring landscapes of Zogye and pledge to protect the wetlands that are so vital to our world.
