Earth Day 2025: Our Power, Our Planet – Let’s Triple Clean Energy by 2030

April 22, 2025 marks the 56th anniversary of Earth Day, a global movement that unites millions in the fight for a healthier planet. This year’s theme, “Our Power, Our Planet”, calls on everyone to rally around renewable energy and aims to triple clean electricity by 2030.

Over the decades, Earth Day has played a pivotal role in educating the public about pressing environmental issues. Deforestation, over-industrialization, and damage to the marine environment have significantly contributed to global warming through the emission of greenhouse gases.

The World Meteorological Organization reports that 2024 was the warmest year on record, with global temperatures soaring 1.55 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels. From 2022 to 2023, the annual mean carbon dioxide in the global atmosphere increased by 2.3 parts per million (ppm). Alarmingly, global carbon dioxide levels have risen by over 2 ppm every year since 2012.

These statistics highlight the urgent need for action. The theme “Our Power, Our Planet” emphasizes the collective strength we possess to make meaningful changes. By embracing renewable energy sources, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions and pave the way for a sustainable future.

Young people, especially in the Global South, are at the forefront of this movement. Their innovative ideas and unwavering commitment are vital in pushing for policies that prioritize the environment.

As Earth Day 2025 approaches, let’s unite our efforts to protect our planet. Together, we can harness our power to create a cleaner, healthier world for generations to come.
