Fishermen in the Xisha Islands, also known as the Paracel Islands, have become the guardians of their own homeland. Since 2017, they have formed Island and Reef Ranger teams to protect and supervise the islands’ delicate ecosystem. On Zhaoshu Island, one of the largest in the archipelago, these local heroes patrol the reefs, safeguard marine life, and ensure the sustainability of their environment.
Located in the South China Sea, the Xisha Islands are a group of islands, reefs, and atolls that boast rich biodiversity and pristine natural landscapes. “We’ve lived here all our lives,” says Liu Wei, a fisherman and ranger on Zhaoshu Island. “The sea provides for us, and it’s our responsibility to protect it for future generations.”
The ranger teams conduct regular patrols, monitoring for illegal fishing activities, collecting marine debris, and observing changes in the coral reefs and marine populations. Their efforts have led to noticeable improvements in the health of the local ecosystem.
