Slovakia Strengthens Ties with China: PM Robert Fico’s Strategic Visit

Slovakia is forging stronger ties with China as Prime Minister Robert Fico embarks on a significant visit to the country. Attending the China International Import Expo in Shanghai from October 31 to November 5, Fico aims to elevate the bilateral relations between Slovakia and China to new heights.

“This is the ‘visit of the year’ for 2024,” Fico remarked during an exclusive interview. Accompanied by the largest-ever Slovak business delegation, the visit underscores Slovakia’s commitment to boosting trade ties and increasing investment with China.

One of the highlights of this growing partnership is the investment by Chinese lithium battery manufacturer Gotion in Slovakia. “It might seem like a small investment, but for Slovakia, it’s a €1.4 billion commitment that will create 1,300 new jobs,” Fico expressed with enthusiasm.

Recognizing China as its biggest trading partner outside the European Union, Slovakia has been actively pursuing a “turn to the East” strategy. Recently, it was among the five EU countries opposing anti-subsidy tariffs on China-made electric vehicle imports, signaling a desire for closer economic cooperation.

During his visit, Fico discussed a range of topics including China-Slovakia relations, collaboration between China and Central and Eastern European countries, and broader China-EU relations. He also emphasized the importance of peace and stability in Europe, touching upon Slovakia’s stance on regional issues.

The strengthened partnership presents new opportunities for Slovakia’s economic growth and signifies a strategic move to enhance bilateral relations. As Slovakia looks eastward, the future holds promising prospects for collaboration and mutual development.
