The Global South is making waves on the international stage, and the world is taking notice. With representatives from around 100 countries gathering at the second Global South Think Tanks Dialogue in Nanjing, there’s a growing belief that the Global South could be a driving force for global growth.
Comprising approximately 80% of the world’s population and significant contributions to global GDP and trade, the Global South is no small player. As geopolitical tensions rise and divisions deepen, these nations are seeking to assert themselves and shape the global agenda.
“We’re not just observers,” said Luka Biong Deng Kuol, former Minister of Presidential Affairs of South Sudan. “We want to be active in the global agenda. If we don’t have the right policies to deliver security and peace, we risk becoming subject to external agendas.”
But unity among such a diverse group isn’t without challenges. Royson Mabuku Mukwena, Vice Chancellor of Mulungushi University in Zambia, emphasized the need for solidarity. “We need to listen to our differences within the Global South to avoid unnecessary rivalries,” he said. “By supporting each other, we can enhance our voice in international organizations.”
For smaller nations like Trinidad and Tobago, cooperation within the Global South offers a buffer against global uncertainties. Researcher Keron Niles highlighted concerns over rising protectionism affecting trade with larger partners. “We’re looking for more cooperation within the Global South to offset risks,” he explained.
Thailand’s experience underscores the importance of supportive partnerships. Chaiwat Meesanthan from Thammasat University noted, “When China comes to our country, they bring projects and investment. Others come just to talk but not invest. We appreciate tangible cooperation.”
Technological advancements and the rise of nations like China, India, Brazil, and South Africa are bolstering the Global South’s capabilities. Behzad Khakpour from Iran pointed out that these changes have created a “very important setting” for these countries to achieve their aspirations.
The overwhelming participation at the Dialogue reflects a shared enthusiasm for collaboration. In a world facing division, the Global South is focusing on what truly matters: prosperity for their people through collective effort.
