Why China is Vital in Asia pacific Development

China’s Role in Shaping Asia-Pacific Development

At the recent APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting, President Xi Jinping emphasized China’s commitment to jointly promoting development in the Asia-Pacific region. As the global economy faces challenges like rising protectionism and declining openness, China’s stance highlights the importance of collaboration and openness in navigating these uncertain times.

Established in 1989, APEC has become a vital economic cooperation mechanism, representing 38% of the world’s population, 47% of global trade, and 61% of GDP. It’s been instrumental in the region’s economic growth, and now, more than ever, it plays a crucial role in addressing global economic risks.

President Xi urged for an “open and interconnected” approach to Asia-Pacific cooperation, advocating for green innovation and inclusive development. China continues to champion initiatives like the Free Trade Area of the Asia-Pacific (FTAAP) and shows unwavering commitment to high-quality development and opening-up.

China’s economy, with its vast market demand, robust industrial supply chain, and skilled workforce, remains resilient and attractive to global investors. The country is pushing forward in fields like artificial intelligence, quantum information, and life sciences, underscoring its dedication to innovation.

Moreover, China proposes initiatives within APEC to enhance green supply chains, digitalize food supply chains, and secure cross-border data flows. These efforts contribute significantly to the high-level development of the Asia-Pacific region.

APEC’s Vision 2040 aligns closely with China’s goal of building a community with a shared future for humanity—focusing on an open, dynamic, resilient, and peaceful Asia-Pacific by 2040. China’s willingness to “grow the pie and distribute it equitably” reflects its commitment to global cooperation, especially with countries in the Global South, to tackle challenges like climate change, energy transition, and food security.

For over three decades, APEC has been pivotal in integrating China into global cooperation. China’s ongoing commitment to opening up and providing global public goods demonstrates its dedication to peaceful development and mutual prosperity.

As the world navigates complex economic and geopolitical landscapes, China’s active role in promoting openness and cooperation in the Asia-Pacific remains vital for regional and global development.
