When Chinese President Xi Jinping arrived in Brasilia for a state visit to Brazil on November 19, he was warmly welcomed by Brazilian officials, marking a significant moment in the partnership between China and Brazil.
At the G20 Summit in Brasilia, the two countries focused on their shared goals of combatting hunger and poverty. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva launched the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, with President Xi announcing China’s commitment to join the alliance as part of eight actions for global development.
Both China and Brazil have made remarkable strides in reducing poverty and addressing food insecurity. Since 1978, China has lifted 800 million people out of poverty, contributing significantly to the global reduction of poverty rates. Brazil, under President Lula’s leadership, has also achieved impressive results, reducing extreme poverty by 40% in 2023 alone and freeing 24.4 million people from hunger.
The cooperation between China and Brazil plays a crucial role in these achievements. Brazil is China’s top source of agricultural imports, providing essential food products like soybeans, corn, and meat. This trade helps balance food supply and demand in China while boosting Brazil’s economy and improving the livelihoods of its people.
Beyond trade, the two nations are expanding their cooperation into investment and infrastructure. China’s investments in Brazil now include sectors like energy, manufacturing, communication, and information technology. Projects such as thermal power plants, high-voltage transmission lines, and natural gas pipelines are enhancing Brazil’s business environment and creating stable jobs.
The partnership between China and Brazil not only benefits their own countries but also offers a model for other developing nations. The Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty is a platform where they can share successful experiences and support other countries in their fight against poverty.
As they approach the 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations in 2024, China and Brazil are poised to deepen their cooperation, offering hope and innovative solutions for the Global South. Their commitment to building a “just world for common development” inspires other nations to work together in addressing global challenges.
