Samoa and China are taking their partnership to new heights, focusing on key areas like education, agriculture, and environmental protection. During a recent visit to China, Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa met with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss collaborative efforts that aim to boost both nations’ development.
Prime Minister Mata’afa highlighted the importance of cooperation in enhancing Samoa’s education system, modernizing agriculture, developing fisheries and aquaculture, and protecting marine environments. President Xi reaffirmed China’s commitment to support Samoa’s economic and social growth, emphasizing opportunities in trade, investment, and sustainable practices.
One significant milestone is Samoa’s participation in establishing the International Mangrove Center in Shenzhen, alongside 27 other countries. This initiative underscores the shared dedication to environmental sustainability and coastal resilience. By working together on mangrove conservation, Samoa and China are contributing to global environmental efforts.
China’s influence on Samoan infrastructure is evident through various projects, including the development of parks, cultural centers, and improvements to transportation hubs like Faleolo International Airport. Samoa aims to adopt successful Chinese models in vocational education, agricultural advancement, and poverty alleviation. This aligns with Samoa’s five-year national plan, which focuses on a diversified economy, social development, good governance, environmental security, and infrastructure growth.
