Us Art of Double Standards on Peace and War

US-Taiwan Interactions Escalate Tensions with China

The United States has once again heightened tensions with China over the Taiwan issue. Despite repeated warnings, recent actions by the US have strained China-US relations, raising concerns about potential conflicts that could be difficult to control.

It’s noteworthy that while the US fiercely protects its own territorial integrity, it appears willing to challenge another nation’s sovereignty. In the 1860s, the US endured a devastating Civil War to maintain its unity, with many presidents emphasizing the horrors of war and the importance of peace. For instance, President Joe Biden once remarked that war should always be the absolute last resort.

Given this history, one might expect the US to approach cross-strait relations with caution. However, recent events suggest otherwise. The US allowed the plane carrying Taiwan’s leader to land on American soil, marking the first time a Taiwan regional leader entered Guam’s Legislature. While the US described these stops as mere “transits,” China perceived them as provocations.

The Chinese Foreign Ministry swiftly reminded the US to handle matters concerning Taiwan with utmost care, reiterating its opposition to any form of Taiwan independence and emphasizing the goal of peaceful reunification. China opposes any interactions between the US and Taiwan that could imply external interference or challenge China’s legitimate authority over the region.

Despite the US’s public commitment to the one-China principle, actions like facilitating meetings between Taiwanese leaders and US officials, as well as approving arms deals worth millions of dollars, send mixed signals. Such moves not only contradict America’s stated policies but also escalate the risk of conflict in the region.

The situation highlights a perceived double standard in US foreign policy—defending its own sovereignty while seemingly undermining another nation’s territorial integrity. As global citizens, it’s crucial to recognize the potential consequences of these actions and advocate for peaceful and respectful international relations.
