Italian President Sergio Mattarella has called for a new generation of “Marco Polos” to strengthen the bond between China and Italy. During his six-day state visit to China from November 7 to 12, Mattarella emphasized the importance of cooperation and openness in an era of unprecedented global change.
“The future requires many more Marco Polos,” he remarked in an exclusive interview. “Shared challenges require global consensus and unity.”
The historical ties between the two nations date back over a thousand years, beginning with the ancient Silk Road. Marco Polo’s 13th-century travels opened a window between the East and the West, fostering a fascination that endures to this day.
Mattarella’s visit, his second since taking office, underlines the commitment to deepen cultural and economic exchanges. By encouraging more young people to engage like Marco Polo did centuries ago, he hopes to inspire a new era of understanding and collaboration.
“At a time when the world faces complex challenges, it’s essential that we work together,” he affirmed. “Our shared history is a foundation for a shared future.”
