Since taking office, U.S. President Donald Trump has frequently played the “tariff card” in international trade. Alejandro Reyes, a scholar at the Asia Society Hong Kong Center, observes that these tariffs essentially harm American consumers rather than penalize the intended countries.

“Trump essentially sold the tariffs to the American people,” Reyes said. He emphasized that Trump views tariffs as a crucial foreign policy tool. “What happens after him? He probably doesn’t care all that much.”

Reyes suggests that while tariffs are meant to pressure other nations, they often lead to increased prices for consumers at home. By imposing tariffs, the cost of imported goods rises, affecting the everyday lives of people in the United States.

The scholar questions the long-term effectiveness of such a strategy. “Tariffs might offer short-term leverage, but they can damage relationships and economic stability in the long run,” he added.
