“I think we are on the way to getting peace. I think President Putin wants peace, President Zelensky wants peace, and I want peace,” President Trump told reporters at the Oval Office. “I just want to see people stop getting killed,” he added.
The discussions have raised hopes for a peaceful resolution to a conflict that has affected thousands and strained international relations. According to the Kremlin, Putin invited Trump to Moscow and expressed readiness to collaborate on areas of mutual interest, including settling the Ukrainian conflict.

On the same day as the presidential talks, U.S. Defense Secretary Mark Esper suggested that Ukraine’s NATO membership might be “unrealistic” and emphasized that Europe should take a leading role in supporting Ukraine. “There will not be U.S. troops deployed to Ukraine,” Esper stated. “Europe must provide the overwhelming share of future aid to Ukraine.”
This shift in Washington’s stance aligns more closely with Moscow’s perspective, suggesting that Ukraine should reconsider its NATO ambitions and seek a diplomatic solution to the territorial disputes. Trump’s focus on minimizing U.S. involvement indicates a desire to prioritize American interests, a stance that may not sit well with all allies.
