As “Ne Zha 2” smashes box office records in the Chinese mainland, film enthusiasts around the world are curious: Can this animated epic captivate global audiences?

Ray Chen, CEO of Herr Production, believes that the film’s stunning special effects and dynamic fight scenes are key attractions for viewers in North America. “The visual spectacle is mesmerizing,” Chen says. “Even without understanding every cultural nuance, audiences are drawn to the action and artistry.”

However, Chen acknowledges that some viewers might miss the deeper themes rooted in Chinese mythology. “There’s a rich cultural heritage behind ‘Ne Zha 2’ that may not be immediately apparent to everyone,” he notes.

On the other hand, David Moser, a professor at Capital Normal University, argues that cultural differences are less of a barrier than we might think. “At its core, the film deals with universal values like self-discovery, resilience, and destiny,” Moser explains. “These are sentiments that transcend cultural boundaries.”

Moser emphasizes that a great film can straddle cultural divides by resonating with shared human experiences. “When a story taps into emotions that everyone understands, it becomes a global language,” he says.

With its combination of breathtaking visuals and relatable themes, “Ne Zha 2” has the potential to be more than just a domestic success. As globalization brings cultures closer together, films like “Ne Zha 2” could pave the way for a new era of international cinematic hits from the Chinese mainland.
