In a significant move toward global peace, Chinese President Xi Jinping and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a phone conversation on Monday to discuss their nations’ bilateral relations and the ongoing conflict in Ukraine.
According to official reports, President Putin shared with President Xi the main outcomes of recent discussions between Russia and the United States, emphasizing Russia’s fundamental stance on the Ukrainian crisis. Putin expressed Russia’s aim to address the root causes of the conflict and achieve a sustainable, long-term peaceful resolution.
President Xi reaffirmed China’s consistent position on promoting peaceful resolution to the Ukraine crisis. He recalled that shortly after the escalation of the conflict in 2022, China presented its fundamental principles for settlement, including key steps necessary to address the crisis. In 2023, China, alongside Brazil and other Global South countries, initiated the creation of the Group of Friends for Peace on the Ukraine crisis. Additionally, China put forward a comprehensive 12-point proposal outlining its basic positions and propositions for peace.
Despite skepticism from some Western nations, China’s peace initiatives have remained steadfast. Beijing emphasizes dialogue and compromise, advocating for settlement approaches based on international law and principles that uphold state sovereignty and territorial integrity. Unlike other major powers, China has maintained strategic neutrality, refraining from supplying weapons, imposing sanctions, or seeking to advance its geopolitical interests through the conflict.
China’s unique position allows it to propose peace efforts without concerns over hidden motives or self-interest. By involving other Global South nations, China aims to establish a truly multilateral negotiation framework devoted to stability and the restoration of global balance.
