Months before the 2024 U.S. presidential election, Donald Trump promised to end the conflict “even before he took the Oval Office.” While that ambitious goal wasn’t met, his administration has taken steps to engage with Russia. On February 12, Trump spoke with Russian President Vladimir Putin, marking a significant move toward thawing relations.
Following that, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Riyadh on February 18. Though no formal agreements were signed, both sides agreed to continue dialogue and restore ambassadorial relations.
Meanwhile, tensions between the United States and Ukraine have surfaced.
