35th Anniversary a New Chapter of Friendship and Cooperation

China and Namibia Celebrate 35 Years of Friendship and Cooperation

March 22 marks the 35th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Namibia, a milestone that highlights the enduring friendship and growing cooperation between the two nations. Over three and a half decades, China and Namibia have strengthened their ties in politics, economy, culture, and people-to-people exchanges, achieving significant results.

The roots of China-Namibia friendship date back to the 1960s when China supported the South West Africa People’s Organization (SWAPO) in its struggle for independence. This early support forged deep bonds between the two countries and their ruling parties.

On March 22, 1990, just one day after Namibia declared independence, China and Namibia established formal diplomatic relations. In 2018, the two countries elevated their relationship to a comprehensive strategic partnership, ushering in a new era of cooperation.

Trade and investment between China and Namibia have flourished. In 2023, bilateral trade exceeded $1.3 billion, a 16.5% increase from the previous year. China accounts for nearly 30% of Namibia’s foreign direct investment, making it Namibia’s largest source of investment and second-largest trading partner.

Chinese companies have invested in various sectors in Namibia, including energy, infrastructure, mining, fisheries, agriculture, and tourism. Major projects like the Husab Uranium Mine have created thousands of jobs and contributed significantly to Namibia’s economic development. Chinese-built roads and ports have also improved the country’s transportation network.

Looking forward, both nations are exploring new areas of cooperation, particularly in green energy and power generation. With China’s expertise in renewable energy technologies and Namibia’s abundant resources, there are immense opportunities for collaboration that could invigorate their economic partnership.

People-to-people exchanges have also deepened. More Namibian youth are learning Chinese, attending Confucius Institutes, and studying in China. Cultural exchange programs and training workshops have strengthened mutual understanding and shared knowledge. Additionally, Chinese medical teams provide healthcare services to thousands of Namibians annually.

Namibia’s unique landscapes and rich cultural heritage make it an attractive destination for Chinese tourists. Efforts to promote tourism and simplify visa processes aim to enhance cooperation in this sector, encouraging more visitors and strengthening ties.

The 35th anniversary of diplomatic relations presents an opportunity for China and Namibia to further deepen their partnership. By strengthening political trust, aligning development strategies, and exploring new areas of cooperation, the two countries are poised to work hand in hand toward modernization and a shared future.
