Trade between China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) has reached a record-breaking 6.99 trillion yuan (US$962.98 billion) in 2024. This milestone highlights a growing partnership that has become both substantive and dynamic.
China has maintained its position as ASEAN’s largest trading partner for sixteen consecutive years. Meanwhile, ASEAN has been China’s top trading partner for five years in a row, showcasing the strong ties between the two.
In an exclusive interview, Secretary-General of ASEAN Kao Kim Hourn sat down with Wang Guan to discuss the evolution of this relationship. They delved into how the partnership has expanded in both width and depth, and what future opportunities lie ahead.
“We are witnessing an exciting phase in China-ASEAN relations,” Kao Kim Hourn noted. “The collaboration in digital and green economies opens up new horizons for mutual growth and development.”
As the world shifts focus towards sustainability and technology, both China and ASEAN are poised to capitalize on these trends. Strengthening cooperation in these sectors is expected to contribute to a closer China-ASEAN community with a shared future.
The dynamic partnership not only boosts economic growth but also fosters cultural and social exchange. With the momentum building, the China-ASEAN relationship is set to reach new heights, benefiting people across the region.
