Jeffery Sachs Waking Up Europe to Strategic Autonomy

Jeffrey Sachs Calls on Europe to Embrace Strategic Autonomy and Strengthen Ties with China

Renowned economist Jeffrey Sachs recently addressed the European Parliament, urging Europe to reclaim its strategic autonomy and strengthen ties with China. He criticized the European Union’s reliance on the United States, suggesting that this dependence hampers independent decision-making and undermines Europe’s own interests.

Sachs highlighted the consequences of U.S.-led policies in Europe, particularly the impact of NATO’s expansion and the conflict in Ukraine. He argued that the abandonment of diplomatic agreements and the escalation of tensions have led to economic challenges for Europe, including soaring inflation and energy dependence on costly U.S. resources.

The economist pointed out that China should not be seen as an adversary but as a valuable partner. “China is not an enemy. China is just a success story which is why it is viewed by the United States as an enemy,” Sachs stated. He emphasized that China’s growth presents opportunities for Europe in trade, technology, and sustainable development.

Examples of successful cooperation include China’s investment in the Piraeus Port in Greece, which has increased capacity and created thousands of jobs, making it one of Europe’s busiest ports. In Hungary, Chinese companies are investing in green energy projects, bringing jobs and technological advancements.

Sachs warned that framing China as a threat and participating in geopolitical tensions, such as deploying warships through the Taiwan Strait, only serves to escalate unnecessary conflicts. He urged Europe to focus on mutual interests and shared challenges, fostering deeper connectivity across Eurasia.

“Europe cannot wait; it must act for itself,” Sachs concluded. By embracing strategic autonomy and strengthening partnerships with countries like China, Europe can shape a future that benefits its own people.
