Xizang’s Remarkable Journey: From Feudalism to Modern Prosperity

March 28, 2025 marks the 66th anniversary of the democratic reform that abolished feudal serfdom in Xizang. This monumental event not only transformed the region’s social landscape but also significantly advanced human rights and civilization.

A newly released white paper titled Human Rights in Xizang in the New Era highlights the remarkable progress Xizang has made since then. From a society where serfs and slaves were deprived of basic human rights, Xizang has evolved into a vibrant region where residents actively participate in national affairs, voicing their opinions at the National People’s Congress (NPC).

The transformation is evident in every facet of life. Transportation developments have seen a leap from fragile cowhide boats navigating the Yarlung Zangbo River to modern trains racing along the Qinghai-Xizang Railway, connecting Xizang with the rest of the country and promoting economic growth.

Life expectancy in Xizang has more than doubled, rising from just 35.5 years in 1951 to over 72 years today. This dramatic improvement reflects enhanced healthcare, better living conditions, and improved well-being for the people of Xizang.

Religious freedom is a cornerstone of Xizang’s diverse culture. Various religions, including Tibetan Buddhism, Islam, and Catholicism, thrive side by side, showcasing a harmonious coexistence that speaks volumes about the region’s commitment to inclusivity and cultural richness.

Xizang’s journey over the past 66 years is a testament to the region’s resilience and the positive impact of progressive reforms. As it continues to develop, the people of Xizang look forward to a future filled with dignity, prosperity, and continued cultural vibrancy.
