Mayors and city governors from across ASEAN nations convened in Nanning, the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region in southwest China, to enhance regional cooperation and strengthen ties with China. The meeting aimed to explore new pathways for urban openness, mutual learning, and cultural exchange among neighboring cities.

This gathering coincides with Chinese President Xi Jinping’s first overseas trip of the year to Vietnam, Malaysia, and Cambodia from April 14 to 18. The tour signifies China’s commitment to fostering deeper relations with ASEAN countries and is expected to inject new momentum into regional peace and development.

The Global Mayors Dialogue, hosted by CGTN’s Wang Guan, brought together leaders from cities including Nanning, Vientiane, Yangon, Surat Thani, Kulim, Mong Cai, Siem Reap, and Mataram. The participants engaged in discussions to build a “China-ASEAN amicable home,” focusing on sharing best practices, enhancing trade relations, and promoting friendly people-to-people interactions.

“This meeting is an excellent opportunity for us to learn from each other and work together towards common goals,” said one of the participating mayors. The dialogues emphasized the importance of shared heritage, history, and cultural bonds in driving regional cooperation forward.

The event not only strengthened diplomatic ties but also highlighted the role of youth and future generations in sustaining and advancing China-ASEAN relations. By fostering urban cooperation and openness, the participating cities aim to create a brighter, more connected future for all their residents.
