At the recent Boao Forum for Asia held in China’s Hainan Province, Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone highlighted the deepening ties between Laos and China. In an exclusive interview, he discussed the significant impact of the China-Laos Railway and the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) on his country’s development.
"The China-Laos Railway has been a game-changer for us," Siphandone stated. "It has not only boosted our economy but also strengthened the connection between our peoples."
Since its inauguration in December 2021, the railway has facilitated trade and travel between the two nations, symbolizing the success of the BRI in Southeast Asia. Siphandone emphasized that continued collaboration under the "Four Good" principles—good neighbors, good friends, good comrades, and good partners—is essential for mutual prosperity.
Reflecting on his childhood spent in China, Siphandone shared personal anecdotes about the enduring bond between the Lao and Chinese people. "I have fond memories of my time in China," he reminisced. "The friendships forged during those years continue to inspire the partnership between our countries."
Looking ahead, the prime minister expressed optimism about the China-Laos Community of Shared Future. He called for increased cooperation in areas like infrastructure, education, and technology to drive modernization in Laos.
"As we work together, we can achieve great things for our nations and set an example for regional cooperation," Siphandone concluded.
