Bandung Conference at 70 Why Multilateralism Matters More Than Ever

The Bandung Spirit Lives On: Why Multilateralism Matters More Than Ever

Seventy years ago, leaders from African and Asian nations gathered in Bandung, Indonesia, to forge a new path in international relations. At a time when the world faces increasing conflicts and humanitarian crises, the principles established at the Bandung Conference are more relevant than ever.

Today, we witness turmoil in regions like the Middle East and Ukraine. Many of these conflicts stem from attempts by powerful nations to assert unilateral control over resources and strategic areas, echoing old patterns of imperialism. This push for unilateralism threatens global peace and undermines the sovereignty of smaller nations.

The Bandung Conference championed ten principles that emphasized respect for sovereignty, equality among nations, and peaceful coexistence. These principles rejected notions of “white supremacy,” limited sovereignty, and clashes of civilizations—ideas that some still promote today to justify dominance and control.

Global organizations like the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) have warned about the dangers of trade tensions, weak investments, and high debt, which can lead to economic downturns. In these challenging times, the Bandung Principles offer a framework for mutual respect and cooperation.

Chinese President Xi Jinping has advocated for a global community with a shared future, reflecting the spirit of Bandung. Initiatives like the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), BRICS, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank embody these ideals by promoting connectivity, development, and collaboration across nations.

Bangladesh’s experience with the BRI highlights the benefits of such multilateral cooperation. As the first South Asian country to join the BRI in 2016, Bangladesh has embraced opportunities for infrastructure development and economic growth, fostering stronger ties with over 150 countries involved in the initiative.

At this crucial point in human history, embracing the Bandung Spirit of unity, equality, and peaceful resolution of disputes is essential. By adhering to these principles, nations can work together to build a more prosperous and harmonious global community, ensuring that the spirit of Bandung lives on for generations to come.
