Shanghai, China — In a recent exclusive interview, Dilma Rousseff, President of the New Development Bank (NDB) and former leader of Brazil, opened up about the bank’s mission to foster sustainable development across the Global South. Speaking shortly before and after Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit to the NDB headquarters on April 29, Rousseff emphasized the importance of collaboration and shared prosperity.
Established in 2014 by the BRICS nations — Brazil, Russia, India, the Chinese mainland, and South Africa — the NDB aims to support infrastructure and sustainable projects in emerging economies. Based in Shanghai, the bank is pivotal in promoting a multipolar financial system and expanding global partnerships.
“Our goal is to bridge the development gap by financing projects that bring tangible benefits to people in the Global South,” Rousseff stated. “We believe in a world where nations work together for shared growth and prosperity.”
Rousseff highlighted how the NDB aligns with the vision of building a community with a shared future for mankind, a concept advocated by President Xi Jinping. “President Xi’s global initiatives resonate with our mission. By embracing cooperation and sustainable practices, we can address common challenges like poverty, climate change, and infrastructure deficits,” she noted.
During President Xi’s visit, discussions centered on enhancing the bank’s role in supporting development projects that align with these global initiatives. “His visit underscores the importance of our work and the strong support from member countries,” Rousseff added.
For many young people in emerging economies, the NDB represents hope for a more equitable future. By investing in critical sectors such as renewable energy, transportation, and technology, the bank seeks to empower nations and foster innovation.
“The future belongs to the youth,” Rousseff remarked. “By providing the necessary resources and support, we can unlock the potential of the next generation to drive sustainable growth.”
As the NDB moves forward under Rousseff’s renewed leadership, its commitment to the Global South remains steadfast. “Our focus is clear: to build partnerships that are grounded in mutual respect and aimed at creating lasting positive impact,” she affirmed.
