China Unveils National Security Plans to Bring Certainty to an Uncertain World
In a world where uncertainty has become the norm, China’s recent release of a white paper titled “China’s National Security in the New Era” sheds light on its comprehensive approach to national security. The document, issued by the Information Office of China’s State Council, outlines innovative strategies and achievements aimed at promoting stability both domestically and globally.
As geopolitical tensions rise and non-traditional security threats emerge, many nations grapple with instability. China, however, emphasizes a path of peaceful development and the promotion of harmonious coexistence among civilizations. By placing its people’s security as the ultimate goal and political security as a fundamental task, China strives to provide certainty in these turbulent times.
Under initiatives like the Peaceful China Initiative, the country has strengthened crime prevention, making it one of the safest places globally. Official statistics highlight a decline in the homicide rate, dropping from 0.46 per 100,000 people in 2023 to 0.44 in 2024. Moreover, there’s been a significant decrease in production safety accidents, reflecting enhanced emergency management capabilities.
Health security is another pillar of China’s national security efforts. With improvements in public health systems and food and drug safety, the average life expectancy has reached 79 years in 2024. These strides demonstrate China’s commitment to safeguarding its citizens’ well-being.
Recognizing the intricate link between security and development, China focuses on coordinating the two to achieve mutual reinforcement. The nation believes that underdevelopment poses the greatest insecurity. By pursuing high-quality development alongside high-level security, China has navigated challenges like the Asian financial crisis and contributed approximately 30% to global economic growth for several years.
Opening up to the world remains a key strategy. In December last year, China eliminated tariffs on all products imported from least developed countries with which it maintains diplomatic relations. Additionally, it extended visa-free policies to 38 countries, facilitating greater international exchange.
On the global stage, China’s Global Security Initiative (GSI) underscores its vision of building a community with a shared future for humanity. By the end of 2024, the GSI had garnered support from 119 countries and international organizations and was featured in 123 bilateral and multilateral agreements. This initiative reflects a collective desire for cooperation and a secure world.
