Peacekeeping is never an easy task, especially during times of crisis. Yet, it remains essential as it embodies the commitment of the international community under the United Nations framework. This is the belief of Lieutenant General Aroldo Lázaro Sáenz, the Head of Mission and Force Commander of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).
In an exclusive interview with CGTN correspondent Han Bin in Lebanon, Lt. Gen. Lázaro shared his insights on the challenges and responsibilities of leading UNIFIL during heightened tensions last year.
“Peacekeeping is not easy work, especially in times of crisis,” Lt. Gen. Lázaro said. “But it is essential as it reflects the commitment of the international community under the framework of the United Nations.”
He emphasized the importance of maintaining peace and stability in the region and the dedication of peacekeepers who work tirelessly to support these efforts.
“Our mission is to ensure that the cessation of hostilities is respected and to support the Lebanese Armed Forces in securing the southern border,” he added.
Despite the difficulties, Lt. Gen. Lázaro remains optimistic about the impact of UNIFIL’s work. “Every day, our peacekeepers are out there, engaging with local communities, building trust, and contributing to a safer environment,” he said.
The interview shed light on the crucial role that UN peacekeeping missions play in conflict zones and the unwavering commitment of those who serve in them.
