Colombia Joins China’s Belt and Road: President Gustavo Petro Seeks Closer Ties

Colombian President Gustavo Petro is looking to the future as his country joins China’s Belt and Road Initiative. In an exclusive interview with CMG’s He Yanke, President Petro shared his vision for stronger ties between Colombia and China.

During his visit to China for the Fourth Ministerial Meeting of the China–CELAC Forum on May 13, President Petro expressed enthusiasm for the new partnership. “We are bringing together the Jaguar of the Americas and the Chinese Dragon,” he said, highlighting the potential for mutual growth and cooperation.

The Belt and Road Initiative, launched by China in 2013, aims to improve global trade links through infrastructure development and investment in countries around the world. Colombia’s participation marks a significant step in strengthening ties between China and Latin America.

“This is an opportunity for Colombia to enhance trade, boost our economy, and foster closer people-to-people exchanges with China,” President Petro explained. He emphasized that the collaboration would benefit both nations, creating new avenues for development and cultural understanding.

As part of the agreement, Colombia and China plan to invest in infrastructure projects, increase trade of goods and services, and promote educational and cultural exchanges. Young people in both countries stand to gain from new opportunities in education, technology, and business.

“We want our youth to be at the forefront of this new chapter,” President Petro said. “By connecting with China, we are opening doors for the next generation to explore, learn, and succeed on a global stage.”

The move has been met with optimism in both Colombia and China, as leaders look forward to a future of shared prosperity. The partnership symbolizes a commitment to working together in a rapidly changing world.

“Together, we can build a community with a shared future,” President Petro concluded. “It’s about mutual benefit and dedicating ourselves to the well-being of our people.”
