In 2022, the country accounted for about 64% of new global renewable energy capacity, adding over 373 gigawatts (GW) to the global total. This remarkable growth is attributed to significant contributions in solar, wind, bioenergy, and hydropower sectors.
According to Bloomberg New Energy Finance, China’s total investment in green technology last year was estimated at $818 billion, surpassing the combined investments of the US, EU, and the UK. This investment boom has also bolstered employment, generating 7.4 million jobs in the renewable energy sector within China alone.
The EU, recognizing China’s leadership and experience in renewable energy, sees significant opportunities for cooperation. By working together, China and the EU can accelerate the global shift to clean energy, develop new technologies, and contribute meaningfully to global climate goals.
Historically, China and the EU have collaborated on climate initiatives. The China-EU Partnership on Climate Change, established in 2005, aimed to strengthen cooperation on low-carbon technologies. This partnership has evolved over the years, with both sides recognizing the urgent need for global climate action.
