The Office for Safeguarding National Security of the Central People’s Government in the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR) announced on Thursday its firm support for Hong Kong’s judicial authorities in punishing actions that endanger national security. The central government emphasized that attempts by external forces to interfere are futile.
A spokesperson for the office stated that some countries, including the United States, have been overgeneralizing and misusing the concept of national security to openly protect and glorify individuals accused of crimes. These acts of coercion and intimidation have not shaken the determination of the HKSAR to uphold national security according to the law, the spokesperson added.
The spokesperson highlighted the case involving Benny Tai Yiu-ting and others, noting that the so-called “primary election” they organized was an orchestrated, premeditated, consensual, and large-scale criminal activity aimed at subverting state power.
Reaffirming the commitment to the principle of “one country, two systems,” the central government expressed unwavering support for the HKSAR in implementing the national security law and the Safeguarding National Security Ordinance.
