China and Samoa are forging stronger bonds as their cooperation continues to flourish across various sectors. During a press briefing on Tuesday, Mao Ning, spokesperson for China’s Foreign Ministry, emphasized the deep-rooted friendship between the two nations.
“China-Samoa cooperation has left its footprints everywhere in Samoa,” Mao Ning stated, highlighting the significance of Samoa’s Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa’s visit to China. The visit is seen as an opportunity to build an even closer community with a shared future between China and Pacific Island countries.
Samoa was among the first Pacific Island countries to establish diplomatic relations with China and sign a Memorandum of Understanding on Belt and Road cooperation. Notable projects include the renovation of Faleolo International Airport by a Chinese company, transforming it into one of the most modern international airports in the South Pacific. Additionally, the China-aided government building, now featured on Samoa’s new banknotes, has become a popular landmark for locals.
“The friendly ties between China and Samoa epitomize China’s cooperation with Pacific Island countries,” Mao Ning added. She emphasized China’s commitment to respecting the sovereignty and independence of Pacific Island nations, honoring their cultural traditions, and supporting their efforts towards unity and development without attaching political strings to its aid.
China has actively supported Pacific Island countries in implementing the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. By building new platforms tailored to their national conditions and exploring new areas for cooperation, China aims to continue its all-round collaboration with these nations.
