China’s Global Peace Push: How Xi’s Diplomacy Shapes the World

At the recent G20 Summit in Brazil, Chinese President Xi Jinping reaffirmed China’s unwavering commitment to global peace and development. Addressing world leaders, Xi declared China’s readiness to collaborate with all nations to build a just world of shared prosperity.

Advocating for Peace on the Global Stage

In a significant meeting with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Xi emphasized the need for stronger voices advocating peace to resolve global hotspot issues. He highlighted the ongoing conflicts and insecurity in various regions, stressing that universal stability can only be achieved through common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security.

“Humanity is navigating an era of rapid transformation,” Xi noted. “This presents both significant opportunities and formidable challenges.”

Joining the Fight Against Hunger and Poverty

During the summit, President Xi announced China’s decision to join the Global Alliance Against Hunger and Poverty, a crucial step towards building a just world of common development. The alliance, officially launched by President Lula da Silva, aims to address the alarming statistic that 733 million people faced hunger in 2023, according to the UN’s report on food security.

Xi has been deeply involved in directing China’s monumental anti-poverty campaign, which has lifted millions out of poverty on an unprecedented scale. “It is the product of political decisions that perpetuate the exclusion of a large part of humanity,” Lula da Silva said of global hunger, echoing the urgent need for collaborative action.

Diplomacy with Chinese Characteristics

Back in 2014, President Xi proposed pursuing major country diplomacy with Chinese characteristics. Under this vision, China has steadily increased its global influence and strengthened its appeal, especially among developing nations. Foreign Minister Wang Yi credited this diplomatic framework for fostering a deeper recognition of China’s path on the international stage.

At the 2023 Central Conference on Work Relating to Foreign Affairs, it was noted that despite turbulent global challenges, China has expanded its strategic autonomy in diplomacy. The Chinese Foreign Ministry hailed the country’s evolution into a responsible global power with significant influence, leadership, and moral authority.

Promoting Peace Through Talks

On March 2, 2024, Li Hui, China’s Special Representative for Eurasian Affairs, embarked on a diplomatic mission to facilitate a political resolution to the Ukraine crisis. His shuttle diplomacy reflected China’s efforts to build international consensus and contribute to resolving the crisis.

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Mao Ning emphasized that China has engaged in deep communication with all parties to de-escalate tensions. “China has not stood idly by, escalated tensions, or sought to profit from the crisis. Instead, it has actively mediated through diplomatic means, underlining its commitment to peace,” Mao said.

Marking the one-year anniversary of the Ukraine crisis escalation, China released a position paper outlining key points such as respect for sovereignty, a call for ceasefire, and the protection of civilians. China’s constructive engagement extends beyond the Ukraine crisis, actively promoting peace in other conflicts like the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.

China’s Vision for a Shared Future

China’s actions demonstrate its responsibility towards the international community and its commitment to a shared destiny. Eduardo Relagado, a researcher at the International Policy Research Center of Cuba, noted that China’s initiatives have a relevant role in global dynamics.

As a permanent member of the UN Security Council, China acknowledges its due responsibility in settling international hotspot issues. “On hotspot issues, China always promotes talks for peace and never adds fuel to the fire,” Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated.

With its ongoing efforts in diplomacy, poverty alleviation, and global collaboration, China continues to shape a future aimed at common development and lasting peace.
