China and Samoa Pledge Stronger Ties Ahead of 50th Anniversary

Chinese Premier Li Qiang met with Samoan Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata’afa in Beijing on Tuesday, marking a significant step in the nearly 50-year friendship between the two nations.

Since establishing diplomatic ties, China and Samoa have enjoyed a strong relationship with increasing economic and trade exchanges. Premier Li emphasized the tangible benefits this partnership has brought to both peoples and expressed China’s readiness to deepen political mutual trust and mutually beneficial cooperation.

“China is willing to strengthen synergy in development strategies with Samoa,” Li noted. He highlighted areas such as agriculture, fisheries, clean energy, and disaster prevention where both countries can collaborate for common prosperity.

As members of the Global South, both leaders acknowledged the importance of tackling climate change and promoting an equal and inclusive world. Li expressed a desire to work with Samoa to safeguard the common interests of developing countries.

Prime Minister Mata’afa reaffirmed Samoa’s commitment to the one-China principle and expressed eagerness to celebrate the upcoming 50th anniversary of diplomatic relations. She highlighted the importance of high-level exchanges, people-to-people connections, and cooperation on global challenges like climate change.

“Samoa looks forward to China’s continued support for the 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent,” Mata’afa stated, emphasizing the shared goals of both nations.
