A Chinese mainland spokesperson has stated that more people in Taiwan believe the United States and Taiwan’s Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) are harming rather than protecting the island.
Chen Binhua, spokesperson for the Taiwan Affairs Office of the State Council, made these remarks on Wednesday in response to a recent public opinion poll. The survey indicated that 51% of those polled in Taiwan disagreed with the US demand for Taiwan to pay “protection fees,” and 57% did not believe the US would send troops to defend Taiwan.
“More people in Taiwan are breaking through the information cocoon created by the DPP authorities,” Chen said, warning that the DPP’s reliance on the US could push Taiwan toward disaster.
Addressing comments by Lai Ching-te about certain US officials having “close ties” to Taiwan, Chen emphasized that this does not change the fact that Taiwan is part of China. He criticized efforts to seek US support for a “Taiwan independence” agenda, stating that such moves would not prevent the possibility of being abandoned.
Chen reiterated that the Taiwan issue is central to China’s core interests and forms the foundation of China-US relations. He urged the US to adhere to the one-China principle and the three joint communiques between the two countries, calling for a halt to arms sales to Taiwan.
