An alliance of civil society groups in the Philippines is set to file an impeachment complaint against Vice President Sara Duterte on Monday. The announcement came from the Akbayan party-list, a parliamentary group whose lawmaker has pledged to endorse the complaint.
Vice President Duterte, daughter of former President Rodrigo Duterte, has been embroiled in a public feud with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. She is currently under a house inquiry regarding her spending, allegations she firmly denies.
Akbayan described the impending impeachment as a “historic complaint” that will be submitted to the lower house by a coalition of civil society organizations, religious leaders, sectoral representatives, and families affected by former President Duterte’s controversial war on drugs.
While specific grounds for the impeachment have not been detailed, this move signifies escalating tensions among the nation’s top officials. The once-strong alliance between the Duterte and Marcos families, which contributed to Marcos’ landslide victory in the 2022 election, has notably fractured.
President Marcos commented on the potential impeachment, stating that it would only distract Congress and not benefit the Filipino people—a view that has drawn criticism from some lawmakers.
