Nauru has officially resumed diplomatic relations with China, marking a significant step in embracing the one-China principle. In a joint communique signed in Beijing, Nauru recognized that there is only one China, and that the government of the People’s Republic of China (PRC) is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, with Taiwan being an inalienable part of China’s territory.
Nauruan President David Adeang expressed his country’s firm support for the one-China principle during his state visit to China. “Our decision to resume diplomatic relations with China opens a new chapter for Nauru’s national development and our bilateral relations,” Adeang stated. He emphasized Nauru’s appreciation for China’s commitment to equality among nations, regardless of size, and affirmed a commitment to deepen cooperation.
The move by Nauru is part of a broader trend, with a total of 11 countries since 2016 choosing to establish or resume diplomatic ties with China based on the one-China principle. This principle asserts that there is only one China, and Taiwan is part of it. The international community has largely supported this stance, with over 100 countries and organizations, including ASEAN, the Arab League, and the African Union, reiterating their commitment.
Other Pacific nations like Kiribati and the Solomon Islands have also reaffirmed their support. Kiribati’s President Taneti Maamau underscored his government’s adherence to the one-China principle and UN Resolution 2758, which recognizes the PRC as the sole legal government of China. Similarly, Solomon Islands’ Prime Minister Jeremiah Manele called on all countries to respect the one-China principle during his visit to China.
The United Nations General Assembly’s Resolution 2758, adopted in 1971, was a pivotal moment that restored all lawful rights to the PRC within the UN. This resolution emphasizes that Taiwan is a province of China with no separate status, reinforcing the one-China consensus internationally.
The resumption of diplomatic ties between Nauru and China reflects the growing international acknowledgment of the one-China principle, signifying an “irresistible trend” towards global unity and cooperation.
