Xi Jinping Advocates for Stronger Belt and Road Cooperation Amid Global Challenges

Chinese President Xi Jinping has called for enhanced efforts to promote high-quality cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), emphasizing that opportunities outweigh challenges in the current complex international landscape.

Speaking at the fourth symposium on Belt and Road construction work in Beijing on Monday, Xi, who is also the general secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Central Committee and chairman of the Central Military Commission, urged for strengthened strategic confidence and focus. He highlighted the importance of courage and responsibility in creating a brighter future for BRI cooperation.

Over the past 11 years, the BRI has achieved remarkable milestones, contributing significantly to global governance reform and socio-economic development. According to Zheng Shanjie, head of the National Development and Reform Commission, the initiative has become the world’s largest and most comprehensive international economic cooperation platform, steadily increasing its global influence and appeal.

Xi underscored the substantial achievements of the BRI and reiterated the need for steadfastness in deepening and solidifying its progress. Xing Guangcheng, director of the Institute of Chinese Borderland Studies under the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, echoed Xi’s sentiments, noting that while the international environment is complex, there are more opportunities than challenges for the BRI.

Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Ma Zhaoxu described the BRI as a vital platform for building a global community with a shared future. He emphasized the initiative’s role as a driving force behind advancing Chinese modernization and as a cornerstone of China’s distinctive approach to major-country diplomacy.
