Experts Say Lais Us Stopover Aimed at Pushing His Secession Agenda

Lai Ching-te’s U.S. Stopover Sparks Controversy Amid Secession Concerns

Taiwan’s leader, Lai Ching-te, recently embarked on a diplomatic tour of three Pacific nations, including stopovers in the U.S. territories of Hawaii and Guam. His visit has drawn significant attention and stirred debate over his intentions and the potential impact on cross-strait relations.

Analysts suggest that Lai’s primary aim was to use his U.S. stopovers to engage with American politicians and seek support. Wang Ran, president of the Sydney Association for China’s Peaceful Reunification, commented that Lai’s transit through the U.S. is an attempt to advance his agenda by leaning on American support.

There are concerns that such actions could escalate tensions across the Taiwan Straits. Some officials have advised against visits that might be viewed as destabilizing gestures during sensitive times. Yuan Juzheng, a Taiwan political commentator, criticized the stopover as a waste of public funds that could undermine peace and violate established principles.

Public opinion in Taiwan appears divided. Recent polls indicate that many Taiwanese disapprove of the idea of paying significant sums for military purchases from the U.S. Additionally, younger generations express worry that Lai’s policies could lead to increased tensions or conflict with the Chinese mainland.

New Taipei City Mayor Hou You-yi has emphasized the importance of continued communication between both sides to maintain peace and stability. He advocates for mutual understanding to ensure that the region remains harmonious.

China has expressed strong opposition to Lai’s U.S. stopover, reaffirming its commitment to the one-China principle. Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian stated that the Taiwan question is central to China’s core interests and urged the U.S. to adhere to the one-China policy and avoid sending wrong signals.

As Lai continues his Pacific tour, the international community watches closely, mindful of the delicate balance required to maintain peace and stability in the region.
